Samuel Ashe was a North Carolina statesman whose career bridged colonial service and the early republic. He first served as assistant attorney for the Crown in the Wilmington district, but became an early supporter of independence, taking up duty as lieutenant and paymaster of the First North Carolina Continental Regiment. He sat in the Provincial Congress, served in the North Carolina Senate, and later commanded the First Troop of North Carolina Continental Dragoons. After the Revolution he became presiding justice of the North Carolina Superior Court, and ultimately Governor of the state, marking a long life of public service. - AsNotedIn
