Caleb Loring, distiller

  • American

Caleb Loring was a distiller of the firm of Loring and Snelling and a ship owner in Colonial Massachusetts. Of the vessels he owned, one THE RISING SUN, was captured and scuttled by the British; another, THE NEPTUNE, was captured by the British privateer PENOBSCOT; recaptured five months later by the American schooner JACKAL; taken again the same day by the British privateer EXPERIMENT, but then, eight hours afterward, was finally taken by the JACKAL and carried into Salem. Although Mr Loring protested, the prize was allowed to the last captor by the Admiralty Court, and the decision confirmed by the Supreme Court, because the papers and commissions of the British were found on board of the vessel when the JACKAL captured her (13 February 1783). - Charles Henry Pope and Katharine Peabody Loring, LORING GENEALOGY
