Sally Hawkins Polk
American
Sarah Sophia Hawkins Polk was the daughter of Philemon Hawkins, a Revolutionary-era official and planter, and the sister of William Hawkins, the seventeenth governor of North Carolina. She married Colonel William Polk — relative of US President James Polk — who had served with George Washington at Valley Forge, and became the mother of several prominent sons, including State Senator Lucius Junius Polk — whose marriage was held in the White House — Confederate General and Episcopal Bishop Leonidas Polk, and George Washington Polk, owner of the Rattle & Snap plantation. Her grandson Isaac Hilliard Polk first married into the influential Sepulveda family of Southern California, known for extensive landholdings and political influence, and later married Minerva Josephine Bradbury, daughter of California real-estate magnate Lewis L Bradbury. - AsNotedIn
