Ann Maria Rodgers Pinkney belonged to one of Maryland's most prominent early American families, the Rodgers line whose sons helped shape the young United States Navy. Born at Havre de Grace, she was the daughter of Colonel John Rodgers and Elizabeth Reynolds Rodgers, and the sister of Commodore John Rodgers, a leading naval officer whose pre-War of 1812 service made him a national figure, and of George Washington Rodgers, who died at Buenos Ayres while commanding the US squadron off Brazil. In 1789 she married William Pinkney — Maryland statesman, US Senator, Attorney General, and American minister to both the United Kingdom and Russia — becoming a central figure within one of the era's most influential political households.
