Joseph Glidden I
Province of New Hampshire
Joseph Glidden was the eldest son of Captain Richard Glidden and the ancestor of Francis Harrington Glidden, founder of Glidden Paints, as well as Carlos Glidden, the inventor of the typewriter. His line forms one branch of the genealogical split in the 1690s that produced the two major Glidden family lines in America, a divergence noted in early New Hampshire and Maine settlement records. His descendants carried the name through four successive generations of men named Joseph, culminating in Francis Harrington Glidden's nineteenth-century industrial career. - AsNotedIn
