Elder John White
English
Elder John White is one of the early settlers of Hartford, Connecticut, remembered for his role in the founding generations of the Connecticut River towns. Born in Shalford, Essex, he sailed from London aboard the LYON in 1632, first settling in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his family lived on a thirty-acre tract later incorporated into Harvard's campus. In 1636, he joined Rev Thomas Hooker's company in the removal to Hartford, and in 1659 became part of the group that established the new community at Hadley, Massachusetts during church disputes following Hooker's death. White returned to Hartford around 1670, where he lived out his final years; his 1683 will names four sons and two daughters, ancestors of a large New England lineage documented by nineteenth-century genealogist Allyn S Kellogg. His cenotaph stands in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford, marking his place among the colony's earliest founders. - AsNotedIn
