Isaac Allerton
English
The Pilgrims Financial Agent
Isaac Allerton was a Mayflower passenger and signer of the Mayflower Compact who became one of Plymouth Colony's most active early officials and traders. Born in Suffolk and later part of the Leiden Separatist community, he arrived in New England in 1620 with his family and apprentice. In Plymouth he served as assistant to Governors John Carver and William Bradford and played a central role in managing the colony's finances, negotiating with London investors, and helping establish the Kennebec fur-trading operation at Cushnoc. His business dealings — ambitious, often profitable and sometimes improper — eventually lead to censure and his departure from Plymouth. Allerton later built a successful career in New Amsterdam and New Haven, owning property, serving on civic councils, and maintaining wide Atlantic trading networks. Married three times and father to several children, he died in New Haven, leaving a legacy marked by both early colonial leadership and complex commercial entanglements. - AsNotedIn
