Victorian Pub Revolution

A Gin Palace is a richly decorated Victorian-era public house, built to dazzle patrons with bright gas lighting, ornate glasswork, and lavish interior finishes. During London's pub boom of the late 1890s, breweries and publicans invested heavily in constructing new pubs and remodeling older ones, often expanding them with billiard halls and other amenities. The Wilton Arms in Belgravia is a rare exception: a surviving 1820s public house that escaped the widespread rebuilding and embellishment of the 1890s.
