Miami is a small city in the northeastern corner of Oklahoma, set between the Neosho River and Tar Creek. It serves as the capital of the federally recognized Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, whose people are "myaamia" - the downstream people - and as a capital for the Modoc, Ottawa, Peoria and Shawnee tribes, reflected in powwow grounds, tribal museums and a cluster of tribally operated casinos along the regional highways. The town preserves several historic Route 66 roadbeds, including the famed Ribbon Road south of town, and also carries the longest Main Street on all of Route 66, where the modern alignment runs through the Miami Downtown Historic District from North 2nd Avenue to South 2nd Avenue. The 1929 Coleman Theatre, a Spanish Colonial Revival movie palace with its mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ, anchors the district.
