An Ancient Roadway Across New Mexico

The central and southern New Mexico stretch of El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro follows the Rio Grande corridor, running roughly parallel to I-25 from Albuquerque to Las Cruces, then along I-10 toward Sunland Park. This modern alignment mirrors the historic route used for centuries by Spanish, Mexican, and later American travelers moving between the interior of New Spain and its northern frontier. The road passes through riverine settlements, military posts, agricultural districts, and trading communities that developed along the valley. Historic places such as Dona Ana Village Historic District, Fort Craig, Fort Selden, La Mesilla Historic District, Mesquite Street Original Townsite, and the Arroyo Alamillo North Section reflect the layered cultural landscape shaped by movement along the Camino. These sites show how the route supported military logistics, regional commerce, farming communities, and cross-cultural interaction in central and southern New Mexico. This byway is part of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro National Historic Trail administered by the National Park Service and represents the northern extension of UNESCO's Camino Real de Tierra Adentro World Heritage listing in Mexico.
