Oyster Packing on the Patuxent

The J C Lore Oyster House is significant for its long association with the commercial fisheries of Maryland's Patuxent River region and for its architectural integrity as a substantially unaltered early-20th-century seafood packing plant. From its establishment in 1920 until operations ceased in 1978, the Lore company serves as a major force in the Chesapeake seafood industry — providing markets for local watermen, maintaining private oyster grounds, and operating one of the most modern and efficient oyster-processing facilities in the region. The present 1934 building, constructed after a hurricane destroyed the original plant, remains largely intact and retains its original equipment, workspaces, and records, now interpreted by the Calvert Marine Museum. - AsNotedIn
