The Hayden Shoemaker's Shop in Windsor, Connecticut, stands as an uncommon Georgian cottage, its brickwork, 12-over-12 sash, and gambrel roof anticipating the larger 2.5-story residence that Captain Nathaniel Hayden would not raise for another three years. Though its modest scale might suggest a small dwelling, family tradition — preserved by Jabez Haskell Hayden — remembers it distinctly as the shoemaker's shop where Captain Hayden carried on his trade. - AsNotedIn

Dea Nathaniel "learned his trade", a tanner and shoemaker, at Westfield, Mass, and employed a number of apprentices and journeymen. His father [Samuel Hayden] gave him the homestead by deed, Jan 8, 1741-1742. He built a "tan house" at the junction of the brooks, a few rods northwest of the Hayden Station Chapel. Three generations, Dea. Nathaniel, [his son] Capt Nathaniel, and [his grandson] Nathaniel L, occupied the tan house, and also the brick shoemaker's-shop (which is still standing). Several apprentices were constantly employed. I remember the tan house, the bark wheel and vats, as last used. The building was torn down about 1823.
