The County Jail of 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas, is a two-story jail built as Gillespie County's fourth correctional facility in 1885. The ground floor included a lockup cell - later used for female inmates - and living quarters for the jailer, while the second-floor housed steel-clad cells and a maximum - security cell at the rear. The stone jail features a heavy steel plate door, barred inner door, and was originally enclosed by a five-foot stone wall topped with embedded broken glass to prevent escapes. Today, the restored building operates as a historic museum preserving the county's early law-enforcement history. - AsNotedIn
