1835/02/00 By February, temporary chambers and committee rooms are available for occupation and a government competition commences to design a new Houses of Parliament on the ruined site. Palace of Westminster Fire, 1834
1836/02/00 Charles Barry Architect Charles Hanbury-Tracy's Royal Commission awards Charles Barry the contract to design a Gothic-style palace. Barry receives a prize of 1500 pounds.
1856/09/16 Truman O Angell Visitor Truman Angell and Brother Kelsey tour the new Houses of Parliament. Truman found the building so burdened with ornaments it became sickening. Truman O Angell's Tour of British Isles
1858/00/00 Whitechapel Bell Foundry Manufacturer Big Ben is cast for the Palace of Westminster, this is the largest bell ever cast at Whitechapel, weighing 13.5 tons. To this day, a cross-section of the bell surrounds the entrance door to the foundry.
