Church Of St Augustine

  • Address: Church Rd
  • Vicinity: Hill End

The Church of St Augustine in Droitwich Spa, England, stands on a hilltop long associated with a Roman fort, its complex history and much-altered form reflecting the impact of Civil War destruction and later re-buildings. By the early 13th century it had taken on a cruciform plan, with a substantial and well-preserved crossing and surviving fabric of the north transept. The chancel retains notable 14th-century work, including sedilia. Civil War damage brought down the nave, central tower, and south transept, after which the impressive Gothic south tower was raised in 1708, apparently re-using earlier material. The north transept was re-faced around 1803, and in 1848 John Shilvock renewed the window tracery, added new roofs, and built a south vestry; he enclosed the west arch of the crossing in 1850. Restoration in 1890 by Lewis Sheppard provided most of the present furnishings, later rearranged in the late twentieth century when the altar was moved to the west end. - AsNotedIn
