A 17th Century to the Duke of Buckingham's Water Gate

Buckingham Street is a short, historic street in the City of Westminster, running from the Strand down to the Victoria Embankment Gardens near the River Thames. The street was first laid out in 1673 on the former site of York House, the grand riverside mansion of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The mansion's surviving York Water Gate stands just beyond the south end of the street, now set within the Embankment Gardens. Buckingham Street preserves one of Westminster's best collections of late-17th-century townhouses, a mix of stuccoed and brick facades retaining their period proportions and detailing. Over the centuries, the street became home to numerous notable residents whose presence is marked by commemorative signs. Among its most famous associations is Charles Dickens, who lived at No 15 (now lost) and used Buckingham Street as the setting for David Copperfield's home, embedding the street in the literary geography of Victorian London. Today Buckingham Street remains a characteristic part of the historic riverside grid between the Strand and the Thames, linking the civic fabric of John Adam Street with the landscaped Embankment Gardens and the surviving fragment of the Duke of Buckingham's estate. - AsNotedIn
