Battell Chapel in New Haven, Conneticut is the largest chapel at Yale University and a key component of the nineteenth-century plan to define the perimeter of the Old Campus. Funded primarily by Joseph Battell and his family, the High Victorian Gothic structure is built of New Jersey brownstone with decorative blue Ohio sandstone, and features a flat coffered ceiling painted blue with gold leaf, oak paneling, and stained-glass windows commemorating early benefactors, presidents, and theologians. Together with Durfee and Farnam Halls, the chapel marked Yale's shift toward donor-named buildings and a unified Gothic revival ensemble. Today Battell Chapel serves the University Church in Yale, hosts Sunday services, concerts and youth ensembles. - AsNotedIn
