The Penfold Pillar Box outside 23 Hampstead High Street is a 19th-century English Listed cast-iron post box in Hampstead, north London. A Mark 1, size 1 model cast by Cochrane and Co of Dudley between 1866 and 1871, the small hexagonal box carries the VR cipher for Victoria Regina, the Royal Arms above the aperture, and a domed lid with beaded cornice and foliated dome. In January 1914 it became the target of a Suffragette arson attack, its contents deliberately ignited with tar and oil and left badly charred. - AsNotedIn
