Eldest of the Districts of Versailles
The Quartier Notre-Dame was ordained by His Majesty Louis XIV in the year 1671, when he caused a new town to be raised north of the Avenue de Paris for the accommodation of his court. Within its bounds is the Hotel des Reservoirs, the residence of Madame de Pompadour. The quarter is distinguished by the Church of Notre-Dame on the Rue de la Paroisse, long the parish of the royal household. Southward lies the Place Hoche, whose noble facades — and the returns along Rue Hoche and Rue Carnot — are now held among the Monuments Historiques. Here stand the Theatre Montansier of the 18th century and the Musee Lambinet, lodged within a mansion of the same age.
The Marche Notre-Dame, established under the Sun King, presents four covered pavilions enclosing a lively open market. Close by runs the Passage de la Geole, a picturesque alley where merchants of antiques and the arts keep their shops. At No 5 Rue du Bailliage rises the former court building, today esteemed as a Monument Historique. - AsNotedIn
