Queen Anne Flats with Shell Hood Canopies

The Artisans' Dwellings on Broad Court are a row of Grade II listed late-19th-century mansion blocks (apartment buildings) in Covent Garden, London. Designed by RS Wornum, they form a cohesive Queen Anne-style group distinguished by red brick construction, rich stone dressings, and slate roofs. Each block rises three storeys over a basement, capped by a dormered mansard roof. The composition features three recessed six-bay ranges linking three advanced, pediment-gabled stair towers, the leftmost tower canted. The left tower carries an aediculed doorway, while the other two are marked by large shell-hood door canopies. Windows are flush-framed, segmental-arched glazing-bar sashes. On the stair towers, the second- and third-floor windows sit within arched recesses framed by flush quoins, with segmental pediments crowning the second-floor openings. A bold modillion cornice runs across the facades, adding weight to the roofline. The dwellings retain cast-iron area railings with urn finials, and are a well-executed example of late-Victorian artisan housing in central London. - AsNotedIn
