Stuccoed terraces and Victorian streets on the Bishop of London's Estate

The streets around Warrington Crescent and Warwick Avenue were laid out from the 1850s on land belonging to the Bishop of London's estate. Development was marked by substantial stuccoed houses, with those along the northern stretch of Warwick Avenue—originally Warwick Road West and later Warrington Terrace—completed by 1863. Formosa Street was set out at the same time as a connecting service road lined with shops, following the pattern established by Samuel Pepys Cockerell's 1824 masterplan for the Tyburn Estate, or "Tyburnia," south of Paddington. The Prince Alfred was built at the junction of Formosa Street and Castellain Road (then Warwick Road North) as part of this early phase of development, and appears under its present name in trade records from 1869.
