Lansdown is a tree-lined district and conservation area in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, renowned for its Regency architecture and the planned Lansdown Estate. Lansdown Road forms its principal thoroughfare, with the western section passing through an area noted for its architectural character and historic villas. At the eastern end stands the Gordon Lamp, a gas lamp installed before the advent of electric street lighting. Near Queen Street, a Victorian pillar box designed by J W Penfold features an elaborate leaf-decorated crest and the royal cipher "VR" (Victoria Regina). Cheltenham retains eight of the sixty-four Penfold-type pillar boxes reputed to survive in the United Kingdom. At the western end, near the junction with Shelburne Road, two cast-iron lamp posts dating from about 1901 were designed for electric lighting.. - AsNotedIn
