Category: Fortification

A ravelin is a detached, triangular defensive structure placed in front of a fortress's main walls, designed to shield the curtain walls and gates from direct attack while forcing enemy troops into exposed positions. Its angled faces allowed defenders to deliver strong flanking fire, and because it stood separate from the main ramparts, attackers had to capture it first — often at great cost — before advancing toward the core of the fortification. - AsNotedIn
