Robeson Peace Arch Concerts

Peace Arch Concerts

In 1952, Paul Robeson gave a 45 minute concert of spirituals, folk songs, labour songs and a fervent version of Old Man River from the back of a flat bed truck to 40000 people on the US-Canadian border. Robeson was to sing at the Fourth Canadian Convention of the union in Vancouver in February of 1952 put was unable to attend because he didn't posses a passport. Robeson, who was opposed to the Cold War and a supporter of Communist Russia, had been labled "subverse" by the US government and his passport was revolked. A second concert was held in 1953. - AsNotedIn
