Volkischer Beobachter Artist Proclamation

18 August 1934

Excerpt of a proclamation from the Volkischer Beobachter, the Nazi Party newspaper.

We believe in the this leader [Fuhrer], who has fulfilled our fervent wish for unity.

We trust his work, which calls for sacrifice beyond all carping sophistry; we place our hope in the man who, beyond man and things, believes in God's providence.

Because the writer and artist create for the people with equal devotion, and because he brings the same conviction...we belong to the leader's followers.... The leader has called upon us to stand by him in trust and faith. None of us will be missing when an affirmation of trust is needed. The nation will never dissolve when it remains united and true.

The proclamation was signed by many prominent people including artist Ernst Barlach, Emil Nolde and Erich Heckel, conductor Wilhem Furtwangler and composers Richard Strauss and Hans Pfitzner.
