1939/08/26 The Kriegsmarine (literally "War Navy", German navy from 1935 to 1945) orders all German ships to sail back to home ports.
1939/08/28 Hollingworth drives alone from Gleiwitz, Germany, to Katowice, Poland and watches as the wind lifts tarpaulin that had been erected by the Germans, revealing a large number of troops, hundreds of tanks, armored cars and field guns hidden in the valley.
1939/08/29 Clare Hollingworth's discovery is published in The Daily Telegraph. The British newspaper, The Guardian, called it in 2015, "probably the greatest scoop of modern times."
1939/08/30 Two days before the invation of Poland, the Norddeutscher Lloyd flagship Bremen is docked in New York alongside the Queen Mary, Ile de France, Aquitania and Normandie. To avoid seizure by the US, Berlin orders Captain Ahrens to leave without passengers. RMS QUEEN MARY, Long Beach
