Vertigo is an American feature film by an English director, Alfred Hitchcock. Retired police detective John Scottie Ferguson (played by James Stewart) is hired to follow Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak) through the streets of San Francisco. The film is based on a 1956 crime novel, The Living and the Dead, by Pierre Boileau and Pierre Ayraud. The book was originally publish, in French, as D'Entre les Morts in 1954. - AsNotedIn
