Rene Lafarge reports, "Limousin oxen were universally renown and esteemed both as beasts of burden and beef cattle."

Breeders crossbreed their Limousin with Agenaise oxen. The offspring were taller and had more muscle in their hindquarter, but where too costly to feed. The breeders, instead, improved the breed through natural selection.

Charles de Leobary and his herdsman, Royer, developer an outstanding herd of "purebred" Limousin. From 1854 to 1896 the de Leobary herd won a total of 265 ribbons at the prestigious Bordeaux Competition, one of France's finest cattle shows.

The reputation of Limousin beef is established in 1857, '58 and '59, when Limousin cattle best other breeds at the farm produce competition in Poissy, near Paris.

The first Limousin Herd Book is established to ensure the uniformity of the breed.

Prince Pompadour, Adrien de Moustier of France and others, import the first Limousin to Canada. Not imported into the United States for fear of hoof-and-mouth disease, the animals were quarantine, on Grosse Isle in Nova Scotia or St Pierre Island.

After being evaluated by JJ Prosser at the International Beef Breeders facility near Denver, Prince Pompadour makes the first Limousin semen available to Col EJ Geeson of Agate, Co. Geeson used the semen on his Angus cows on his ranch east of Denver.

Located 35 mi SE of Denver, Running Creek Ranch begins raising Limousin cattle. Running Creek annually markets 250 virgin 2 year old bulls and 300 bred heifers.
