  • American

Mr Shopbell was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, March 2, 1835 and came to Janesville in 1850, making his home in this city since that time. He was a carpenter, and worked at this trade until he enlisted in the Twelfth battery, where he served until the close of the war, participating the battles of Jake, Corinth, Raymond, Jackson, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge and Allatoona. He was with Sherman on the great march through Georgia, and participated in the battles of Savannah and Bentonville.

Soon after returning home he formed a partnership with Sutton Norris, and commenced the manufacturing of sash door, blinds, and builders' furnishings at the Phoenix Planing Mills. This partnership continued until about a year and a half ago, when the firm dissolved, Mr. Norris retiring from business. He leaves a wife and four daughters, Mrs Kittie Frink, Misses Mamie, Mattie, and Edna Shopbell. - Janesville Daily Gazette
