Standard Oil Company of New York, commonly known as Socony, is established in 1882 as part of the Standard Oil Trust, created to consolidate multiple petroleum firms under a unified management structure led by John D Rockefeller. Formed to oversee refining, shipping, and marketing operations in New York and New England — and to advance the trust's growing overseas business — the company becomes an independent entity in 1911 after the US Supreme Court orders the dissolution of the Standard Oil monopoly, dividing the trust into dozens of successor firms. Socony later evolves through mergers and reorganizations, ultimately becoming part of ExxonMobil, one of the major descendants of the original Standard Oil system. - AsNotedIn
