AIDS TO NAVIGATION

The Aids to Navigation mission of the US Coast Guard dates back to the building and illumination of the first American lighthouse on Little Brewster Island in Boston Harbor in 1716. In 1851, the United States Congress created the United States Lighthouse Board under the Department of Treasury to replace the original Lighthouse Establishment in the supervision of the construction and maintenance of all lighthouses and navigation aids in the United States. - AsNotedIn
