Joseph Manigault, born in 1763 into the influential Wragg-Manigault family of Charles Town, emerges as a figure shaped by Huguenot heritage, inherited wealth, and the educational ambitions of South Carolina's elite. Raised by his grandparents after the early death of his parents, he studied abroad in England and Geneva before returning home to manage extensive plantations and a prominent Meeting Street residence.
