William Bailey Lang

William Bailey Lang was a prominent iron merchant for the Lowmoor Iron Company and the Charles Cammell and Company of Sheffield England. He grew-up in New York City on Nassau St (opposite the NY Times Building).
Mr Lang was the jury foremen at the second trial of Michael Cancemi, the desperate Italian burglar. Michael Cancemi was accused of murdering policeman, Eugene Anderson, shooting him at the corner of Centre St and Grand St on 22 July 1857. The first trial ended in a murder conviction, but, due to Lang's dogged determination, the second trial ended in a manslaughter conviction. Michael Cancemi served served a few years in a New York State prison and eventually became a General in the Italian Army. New York authorities eventually decided he was innocent.
William Lang worked in Boston, Massachusetts for a time but he is best known for his own company in New York City at 50 Beekman St (demolished). He had a home on E 18th St near 4th Ave (demolished).
Mr Lang was also an architect, know for designing cottages in Roxbury, Massachusetts (lost) and having a hand in designing his own home in Scarsdale, NY. - AsNotedIn
