Henry Glade, born in Hanover, Germany, came to New Orleans as a child and learned the milling trade that would define his career across the American Midwest. After building mills at Swiss Valley, Iowa, and David City, Nebraska, he purchased the Koenig and Wiebe Mill in Grand Island and established the Henry Glade Milling Company. With the help of his four sons — August, Fred, Filbert, and Arthur — the firm expanded its reach, shipping flour and grain products to Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Iowa and Michigan.
