Clarence R Ware

  • American

Clarence R Ware was a leading citizen of Lawrenceville, Georgia, whose work significantly shaped the community's educational, commercial, and religious life. He moved to Lawrenceville in 1900 to serve as superintendent of the local schools, having taught previously in Barrow County, and from 1907 to 1920 he held the post of Gwinnett County School Superintendent during a period when the county struggled to modernize its public school system. In his 1908 annual report, Ware lamented widespread public indifference toward education and argued for compulsory attendance legislation, while he and the school board worked to improve teacher qualifications and strengthen county standards. Beyond education, Ware helped organize the First National Bank of Lawrenceville and served as its first president and director, participated actively in the Kiwanis Club, and directed the Methodist Church Sunday School. In 1929 he moved his family to Atlanta, but he continued commuting to Lawrenceville for many years to oversee his work at the bank. - AsNotedIn
