John Nuttall
English
John Nuttall, at the age of eight, began working as a tierboy in a calico printworks at Love Clough (near Accrington, England) and by the age of eleven, he had a job in a coal mine at nearby Goodshaw Hills. After twenty years of coal mining, Mr Nuttall came to America and work for his relatives at Crabtree and Wilkinson, silk handkerchief printers on Staten Island. After seven years, Nuttall headed to the bituminous coalfields near Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania to open a coal mine. He located 200 acres of suitable land along a new branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, returned to Long Island and persuaded his Crabbtree relatives to invest in his venture. The mining town eventually became known as Powelton. After opening various other coal mining operations, John Nuttall went to the New River Gorge to open yet another coal mine, now known as Nuttallburg. The mine ran about 3.5 miles on the north bank of the Gorge, from Fern Creek to Keeney's Creek. - AsNotedIn
