Mark Hopkins was one of four major investors of the Central Pacific Railroad that was built from Sacramento, California, through the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Promontory, Utah. Called Uncle Mark by the other three of the Big Four, Hopkins was an abolitionist and an organizer of the Republican Party in California who was known to be thrifty, unpretentious, a recluse and a vegetarian. - AsNotedIn
