John Stanyarne

John Stanyarne was a major Lowcountry planter in South Carolina whose holdings spanned Johns Island, St Paul Parish, and Kiawah Island in St John Colleton Parish, where he cultivated rice and indigo. Born to John Stanyarne and Elizabeth Rivers, he married three times — first to Mary Whitmarsh, then to Magdalen Meggett, and finally to Sarah Williamson — and was the father of several daughters whose marriages linked the family to the Gibbes, Simmons, Raven, Hext, Mathewes, Sams, and McGillivray households. His will named a wide network of children and grandchildren and reflected the scale of his estate, which included 286 enslaved people. He died in 1772, aged about seventy-seven. - AsNotedIn
