Henry Poole (sculptor)

  • English

Henry Poole was an English sculptor whose career developed from a family tradition of architectural carving. Trained at the South London Technical School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools, he worked early in the studios of Harry Bates and G F Watts, assisting on major commissions such as Physical Energy. Poole became a leading architectural sculptor of the Edwardian period, producing neo-Baroque reliefs and figures for prominent buildings including Cardiff City Hall, Methodist Central Hall, Deptford Town Hall, and the Colnaghi and Obach facade. His collaborations with architect H V Lanchester and the partnership Lanchester, Stewart & Rickards were especially prolific. After the First World War he executed sculpture for major naval memorials at Chatham, Plymouth, and Portsmouth. Elected ARA in 1920 and RA in 1927, Poole exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and remained active in artistic societies including the Chelsea Arts Club and the Art Workers' Guild. - AsNotedIn
