William Brewster (Pilgrim)
English
William Brewster was the senior elder and spiritual leader of Plymouth Colony, guiding the Separatist community from its years in Leiden through the founding of New England's first permanent English settlement. Born in Nottinghamshire and trained in government service, he became a central figure among the Pilgrims, hosting their clandestine meetings, helping organize the MAYFLOWER voyage, and signing the Mayflower Compact in 1620. In Plymouth he served as ruling elder for decades, shaping the colony's religious life with steady authority while avoiding formal political office. Brewster also participated in the colony's economic ventures, including the Plymouth Undertakers' efforts to stabilize finances through trade. Living first on Leyden Street and later at his farm in Duxbury, he remains a respected patriarch until his death in 1644, remembered for his leadership, scholarship and unwavering role in sustaining the Pilgrim community. - AsNotedIn
