Heroic Medicine



Heroic medicine was the well intentioned and accepted practice in Indian Ayurveda, Ancient Greek, Roman and European medicine that treated the patient with such methods as blistering, bloodletting, enemas, sweating and vomiting. Illness was believed to be caused by an imbalance of the bodies four fluids known as humors. Hippocratic medicine thought these to be black bile, yellow bile, phlegm and blood. Heroic Medicine was the standard medical treatment in the 18th and early 19th centuries. - AsNotedIn
