Carnegie Libraries of Washington TR

These buildings are all well preserved examples of libraries built with grants from the great iron and steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie. They are significant because of their association with Carnegie and with the tradition of philanthropy of which he was the pre-eminent exemplar. They are also important in the history of the communities they served, often as the central focus of intellectual and social activity. Finally, these buildings are examples of a distinct genre of early-twentieth century architecture, and in many locales the Carnegie library is one of the few reminders left from that period. - NRHP, 31 December 1984
