Bruges Almshouses

Godshuizen, or almshouses, are charitable housing in Belgium historically built by wealthy benefactors or guilds as dwellings for elderly citizens. Residence of a godshuis, from the Dutch for god house, were obliged to offer prayers of thanks in the complex's chapel. Many of the picturesque almshouses in Brugge, some dating from the medieval ages, have been modernized, restored and made available to the elderly. Their small gardens are usually open to the public. - AsNotedIn
