Iditarod Trail

The Iditarod trail is a series historic gold rush and mail routes from Seaward to Nome but it is best known for the current Iditarod race that traverses almost 1000 miles from Anchorage to Nome. The race uses two routes over the historic trail system that alternate each year. The northern route (even years) goes through Ruby, Galena and Nulato while the southern route (odd years) passes through Iditarod, Shageluk, Anvik, and Grayling.

In 1925, diphtheria serum was mushed from Nenana to Nome, over portions of the historic trail, to stave off an epidemic. - AsNotedIn
