Murfreesboro, a city of approximately 30,000 people at the geographic center of Tennessee, is located atop a ridge overlooking the Stones River, site of a major battle during the Civil War. East Main Street is the city's principal east-west thoroughfare and the location of its most significant concentration of residential structures built by some of Murfreesboro's most historically prominent families in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. - NRHP, 24 May 1985
