Marshall Islands may be best known for the US nuclear testing on some of the northern atolls between 1947 and 1962, especially on Bikini Atoll. The US military presence continues in the islands at US Army Kwajalein Atoll (USAKA) Reagan Missile Test Site.
Beginning in 1947, the Marshall Islands were part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI), a United Nations Trust Territory administered by the United States of America (US), ultimately attaining independence on October 21, 1986. During this trusteeship, places of historic interest where placed on the US National Registry of Historic Places. - AsNotedIn
