The Colonial Germantown Historic District is an American National Historic Landmark District in the Germantown and Mount Airy neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with hundreds of historic commercial and residential buildings. Originally defined as the 4500 to 6600 blocks of Germantown Avenue, between Windrim Avenue and Sharpnack Street, it was later expanded north to Cresheim Valley Drive.
In 1868, Francis Daniel Pastorius established a Dutch and German speaking settlement four miles north of Philadelphia as a refuge for Mennonites and Quakers from Holland and the Rhine valley who could be imprisoned in Europe for their faith. The settlers, typically carpenters, dyers, shoemakers, tailors and weavers, spent the first year clearing the land and planting crops for food and flax for weaving before moving on to the business of producing linen cloth.
The historic district is also the location of the Battle Germantown, where George Washington and 11,000 patriot soldiers attacked 9,0000 British and Hessian troops. - AsNotedIn
