Colonial Saltbox

The Nehemiah Royce House a 30' x 30' two-story frame Colonial saltbox originally built in 1672 but with most of its now visible historic fabric dating from the early 18th-century and later. The house faces south at 538 North Main Street, moved there in 1925 by Lucy and Helen Royce from its original location across the street to the east at 499 North Main Street. In the 1940s it was rehabilitated under the direction of William Sumner Appleton (1874-1947) of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities and J Frederick Kelly (1888-1947), Connecticut's leading historical architect of the time. - NRHP, 24 August 1998
