Jefferson Barracks was the first permanent United States military post west of the Mississippi, and played a prominent role in every American conflict from the time of its founding in 1826 until the Army declared it surplus in 1946. The historic district recognizes its rich history, including the first US Army's first basic training center and the first successful parachute jump from an airplane. Based upon the 232 acres transferred to the County from 1951 to 1971 through the Federal Lands to Parks program, St Louis County created Jefferson Barracks Park. In addition to interpretive programs on the history of the site and historic reenactments, the park offers many recreational activities and facilities, including archery, athletic fields, running and walking trails, playgrounds, concerts and community events. In 1995 the Land and Water Conservation Fund assistance program provided funding for trails. - NPS
