1874/00/00 Since the city of Bakersfield would not give the Southern Pacific two blocks of land for a new depot, the SP builds a depot (lost) five miles east of the city and establishes their own town, Sumner. The Sumner post office will open in 1876.
1889/00/00 Southern Pacific Railroad Owner A new Southern Pacific Depot, a polychromed brick building with a Richardsonian roof, is erected to replace the original station built in 1874. By 1892, J H Tolfeww will own a restaurant in the east end of the complex.
1942/01/00 John H Christie Architect A remodel of the Southern Pacific Depot in East Bakersfield nears completion. Designed by John Christie and his SP San Francisco staff, the redesign removes detail to "clean up the building" into a wartime interpretation of the Late Spanish Revival style.
2021/06/00 Union Pacific Railroad Owner Union Pacific vacates the old Southern Pacific Depot and moves to a new communication center a quarter-mile east at 1100 Sumner Street.
